Help save our wall paintings
Did you know that St Botolph’s church contains some of the most important medieval wall paintings in the country? Created some 600 years ago these paintings depict the last days of Christ’s life and his ascension into heaven in gory and at the same time glorious detail.
Although our church is in reasonable condition — given that we think it is close to 900 years old — essential maintenance is required to the thatch roof to keep the building watertight. The first part of this work, including replacing the ridge, the guttering and the tower roof is scheduled for next summer.
Our vision
Take a close look at the wall paintings today and try to imagine what impact these must have had on medieval peasants living in a world where enchantment and mystery were part of the natural order. We want to bring a sense of that to life with a new lighting system that will highlight the colours of the paintings and help visitors to identify each of the biblical events illustrated.
More information will be available to allow people to have a better understanding of the paintings and their historical significance. Our aim is to put these ancient but thrillingly relevant drawings on the map so that local people can be truly proud of this heritage on our doorstep.
Fund raising
We anticipate that the total cost of the planned repairs and improvements will be just over £60,000 which we intend to raise through grants and donations. We have already made a number of grant applications but others require that we can show we already have a percentage of the required funds.
Support our project
You can support our vision by telling your friends about the paintings and our project to protect them and raise their profile.
You can also contribute to our project by making an online donation through the Parish Giving Scheme.
And please let us know if you have any ideas for fund raising or sponsorships!
