Talking with God

Prayer is having a conversation with God. In other words, prayer is simply talking with God. You can pray and talk with God at anytime and anywhere about anything that is on your mind. You don’t have to be in a church or use special words. And you don’t have put your hands together or close your eyes.

God is listening. He wants to hear from you!

Jesus said:

‘Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.’ (Matthew 7.7)

And the Bible encourages us to pray

‘in the Spirit on all occasions.’ (Ephesians 6.18)

So, why not give it a go?

What can I pray about?

You can ask God to help the people you care for. You can talk to him about the things you need or the things you’re worried about. You can say thank you to God for the things you’re grateful for and you can say sorry when you make mistakes.

How do I pray?

You can pray by talking out loud, in your thoughts. You can use your own words or the prayers others have written, making them your own.

You can also pray in lots of different ways. For example, you can pray by drawing, painting and writing. You can pray through music and dance. You can pray in busy, noisy places and in quiet, still places.

Listening to God

As prayer is a conversation it is also about listening to God. Many of us find it easier to listen to God when we are in quiet places, away from distractions where we can focus and refocus our scattered senses on God.

As you listen to God you find God can speak to you in many different ways, through the Bible, through your experiences, feelings and thoughts, or through what is around you — for example something beautiful you see in nature.

Sometimes we don’t ‘hear’ anything and our thoughts seem random or we’re not sure if it is God or not. At those times we can ask God to confirm what we think we’re hearing in other ways. We can ask for discernment, we can ask a trusted friend or leader who loves Jesus what they discern and think. And we use our own conscience, remembering that God will never contradict what is in the Bible.

The more you pray, the more you will learn to discern God’s voice.
